A weekly therapy group where children can understand and cope with the emotional impact of divorce alongside peers who get it

Divorce Process Group for 1st-3rd Grade Children

What you can expect from this group:

Children often experience many different emotions when their family is going through a separation or divorce. They may feel sad, angry, confused, worried, relieved, or unsure how to talk about what is happening. This group provides a supportive space where children can explore those feelings in ways that feel natural, engaging, and age-appropriate.

Led by a psychologist, each session incorporates play, creative activities, storytelling, games, and guided discussion to help children better understand and express their experiences.

Research suggests that children adjust best to major life changes when they have opportunities to make sense of what is happening around them. This group helps children develop a clearer understanding of the changes in their family while learning that all feelings are welcome and manageable. The goal is not to eliminate difficult emotions, but to help children develop the understanding, support, and resilience needed to move through this chapter of their lives in a healthier way.

One of the most powerful aspects of the group is the sense of community it creates. Children quickly discover that they are not the only ones navigating these changes. Connecting with peers who share similar experiences can reduce feelings of isolation, normalize many of the thoughts and emotions that arise during family transitions, and help children feel understood in ways that are difficult to replicate elsewhere. Simply knowing, "I'm not the only kid going through this," can be profoundly reassuring.

While divorce is a significant family transition, it does not have to define a child's experience. With support, connection, and opportunities to process their feelings and make sense of their changing family, children can adapt, grow, and thrive through change.

Who would benefit from this group?

This group may be a good fit for children who:

  • Have parents who are currently separating or divorcing
  • Experienced a divorce or separation within the past few years
  • Are adjusting to living in two homes
  • Have questions or worries about changes in their family
  • Seem sad, angry, confused, withdrawn, or emotionally overwhelmed by the transition
  • Would benefit from connecting with other children who understand what they are experiencing
  • Need a supportive outlet to express feelings through play, art, stories, and conversation

Children do not need to be struggling significantly to benefit from this group. Many families join simply because they want their child to have additional support, a place to process their experience, and the reassurance that they are not alone during a time of change.
